# Addition and Subtraction Match

Students learn addition and subtraction within 100 ([Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29844)). This game helps you get fast at adding and subtracting. You match problems to answers. You work with addends (numbers you add together) and sums (answers to addition). You use inverse operations (opposite operations that check your work) ([Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29852)). Some pairs use doubles and multiples of ten. These make math easier ([Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29850)).

## How to play

1. Cut out all the cards along the dotted lines.
2. Lay the cards face up on a table.
3. Find a problem card and an answer card that match.
4. Place them together as a pair.
5. Keep going until all cards are matched.
6. Check your work with the answer key.

You can play with a friend. Shuffle the cards. Lay them face down. Take turns flipping two cards. Do they match? Keep the pair. They don't match? Flip them back over.

## Match the pairs

| Column A | | Column B |
|:---|:---:|:---|
| **A.** addend | ____ | **1.** Subtraction is the inverse of addition |
| **B.** sum | ____ | **2.** 3 in the problem 3 + 5 = 8 |
| **C.** subtract | ____ | **3.** 15 in the problem 15 − 3 = 12 |
| **D.** compose | ____ | **4.** The operation shown by the minus sign |
| **E.** inverse | ____ | **5.** Making 10 with 4 + 6 or 7 + 3 |
| **F.** doubles | ____ | **6.** 6 + 6 = 12 |
| **G.** minuend | ____ | **7.** 10, 20, 30, 40 are multiples of 10 |
| **H.** multiple | ____ | **8.** 8 in the problem 3 + 5 = 8 |

## Answer key

- **A** matches **2** (addend: 3 in the problem 3 + 5 = 8)
- **B** matches **8** (sum: 8 in the problem 3 + 5 = 8)
- **C** matches **4** (subtract: The operation shown by the minus sign)
- **D** matches **5** (compose: Making 10 with 4 + 6 or 7 + 3)
- **E** matches **1** (inverse: Subtraction is the inverse of addition)
- **F** matches **6** (doubles: 6 + 6 = 12)
- **G** matches **3** (minuend: 15 in the problem 15 − 3 = 12)
- **H** matches **7** (multiple: 10, 20, 30, 40 are multiples of 10)
