# Reading and Responding to Texts
*Grade 9 English Language Arts: Strategies for Understanding and Responding to Texts*

## Slide 1: Reading and Responding to Texts
*Grade 9 English Language Arts: strategies for understanding and reacting to what we read, watch and hear*

> Notes: Introduce the unit. Explain that General Outcome 2 covers how we use strategies to understand texts and how we respond personally and critically to them. Preview that today's lesson touches strategy, interpretation, artistry and comparison across texts.

## Slide 2: Before You Read: Set Yourself Up
- Preview a text's intent, content and structure before diving in
- Choose a reading rate and strategy that fits how familiar the topic is
- Use visual and textual cues to skim and scan for information fast
- Check structural features like headings, captions or menus to read efficiently
*Sources: [Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/15575), [Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/15575), [Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/15576)*
> Notes: Link to,,. Model previewing with a short article or website. Formative checkpoint: have students preview a new text for 60 seconds and jot down purpose and one structural feature they noticed. Support: provide a preview checklist. Extension: ask students to compare previewing print text versus a website or app.

## Slide 3: Your Background Shapes Your Reading
**Prior Knowledge**
What you already know and have experienced changes how you read a text. Two readers can take away different meanings from the same story, poem or article because they bring different lives to it.
**Explicit vs Implicit**
Some ideas are stated directly (explicit). Others are suggested and must be inferred (implicit). Strong readers identify both and listen to how classmates interpret the same text differently.

> Notes: Covers, on prior knowledge and on explicit/implicit ideas. Discussion checkpoint: pairs share how their own background affected their reading of a class novel. Support: sentence starters like 'I noticed... because I have experienced...'. Extension: ask students to find one explicit and one implicit idea in the current class text and justify their choice.

## Slide 4: Responding: Meaning and Artistry
- **Character Motives**: Analyze why characters make choices and what that reveals about people, including ourselves
- **Theme and Point of View**: Identify the central message and whose perspective shapes the telling
- **Personal Connection**: Relate themes, emotions and experiences in a text to issues that matter to you
- **Literary Techniques**: Notice irony, symbolism, perspective and proportion, and discuss how they build meaning
- **Character Development**: Judge whether a character's behaviour stays consistent or whether change feels believable
- **Mood and Impression**: See how language choices and the plot-setting-character mix create a dominant feeling
*Sources: [Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/15581), [Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/15582)*
> Notes: Covers and. Walk through each box using a shared class text as the example. Formative checkpoint: exit ticket asking students to pick one technique (irony, symbolism, perspective or proportion) and explain its effect in one sentence. Support: give a glossary card with definitions and one example each. Extension: students find a second technique the author uses that is not listed and explain its effect.

## Slide 5: Comparing Texts Across Forms
1. **Pick two texts**: Choose oral, print or media texts, ideally from different eras, genres or mediums
2. **Compare characters**: Look at a main character in each text and note similarities and differences
3. **Track plot and theme**: Compare how plot and theme develop across the two texts
4. **Test the narrator**: Consider how a change in narrator might shift the overall meaning
5. **Evaluate effectiveness**: Judge believability of plot and setting, credibility of characters, and how conflict resolves
*Sources: [Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/15585)*
> Notes: Aligns to. Good activity: pair a classic short story with a modern film or graphic novel adaptation covering a similar theme. Formative checkpoint: small groups complete a comparison chart for two of the five steps and share out. Support: provide a partially filled comparison chart. Extension: ask students to suggest an alternative treatment or ending for one of the texts and justify the change, connecting to 's summarizing and alternative-treatment skill.

## Slide 6: Putting It All Together
**Summary:** Reading well means previewing a text with purpose, drawing on your own experience, spotting explicit and implicit ideas, and responding to theme, character and technique. Comparing texts across genres and eras sharpens your judgment about what makes a story or article work, and listening carefully to others' interpretations, including evaluating a presenter's credibility and evidence, builds a fuller picture of any text.
**Question:** Think of a book, show or article you strongly agreed or disagreed with. What in your own background shaped that reaction, and how might someone with a different background have read it?

> Notes: Wrap-up discussion or journal entry. Use the question as an exit ticket or think-pair-share. Ties together,, and (listening to and evaluating others' interpretations). Support: allow students to respond in point form or through a quick sketch plus caption. Extension: ask students to connect their answer to a specific literary technique from earlier in the lesson.
