# What your child will learn in Grade 8 Science

## Science and Technology: Fluids

Your daughter will learn that fluids, liquids and gases, are everywhere in everyday life and technology. Air, water, oil, and natural gas are all fluids, and so are many household products like paint, shampoo and syrup. She will investigate what fluids are made of, why we choose certain fluids for certain jobs, and how their properties affect the way we use them. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17299).

She will discover that many household materials are mixtures or solutions where water is the main ingredient. She will learn the difference between a pure substance (like salt by itself), a mixture (like sand and water stirred together), and a solution (like salt dissolved in water where you cannot see the salt anymore). She will test how much of a substance can dissolve in water and what makes it dissolve faster or slower, such as temperature or how finely crushed the material is. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17302).

Your daughter will measure and compare important properties of fluids. Density tells you how heavy something is for its size, oil floats on water because it is less dense. Viscosity describes how thick or runny a fluid is; honey is more viscous than water. She will learn how pressure works: it is the force pushing on an area, which is why a thumbtack with a sharp point (small area) pushes in easier than a flat object with the same force. She will see how these properties matter in real life, from why certain oils work better in cold weather to how hydraulic lifts use fluid pressure to lift heavy objects. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17303).

She will learn to read WHMIS labels on household products so she knows which substances are hazardous and how to handle them safely at home and in the lab. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17301).

Your daughter will see how technology uses fluid properties to solve problems. Mining companies dissolve salt or potash in water to extract them from the ground. Different motor oils are designed for different seasons because temperature changes how thick they are. Ketchup bottles are designed so the ketchup flows at just the right speed. Pumps and valves move fluids through pipes in everything from medical IV lines to oil pipelines. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17304).

### How to help at home

**Explore density and buoyancy.** Fill a glass with water and ask your daughter to predict whether different objects will float or sink (a cork, a grape, a piece of clay). Then test them. Talk about why some things float: they are less dense than water. You can also try dissolving salt in water and watching how a grape that sank in fresh water will float in very salty water because the salt water is denser. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17303).

**Investigate dissolving.** Put a spoonful of sugar in a glass of cold water and another in hot water. Ask her which dissolves faster and why. Try the same experiment with salt or instant coffee. This shows how temperature affects how quickly things dissolve. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17302).

**Read product labels together.** Look at cleaning products, medicines, or food packages under the sink or in the kitchen. Ask her to find the ingredient list and identify which products are solutions (like vinegar, which is mostly water) or mixtures. Talk about why the label tells you how to store or use the product safely. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17301).

**Test viscosity.** Pour honey, oil, and water into separate clear containers or glasses tilted at an angle. Watch which flows fastest and which is thickest. Ask her why different liquids flow at different speeds and where she sees viscosity matter in real life, like in cooking or car maintenance. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17303).

**Build a simple hydraulic system.** Use two syringes connected by a tube filled with water. Push one syringe and watch the other move. This shows how pressure in a fluid can transfer force from one place to another, the same way hydraulic lifts work in car repair shops. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17304).

## Nature of Science: Living Things and Body Systems

Your daughter will learn that all living things, from the tiniest single cell to the largest animal, are made of cells and organized into systems where different parts work together. She will investigate how organisms are similar and different, and how their structures help them survive and function. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17317).

She will study cells as the basic unit of life. A single-celled organism like an amoeba can do everything it needs to do with just one cell, while a multicelled organism like a human has trillions of cells organized into tissues and organs that each have a job to do. She will learn the difference between plant cells (which have a rigid cell wall) and animal cells (which have a flexible membrane), and how gases and liquids move in and out of cells. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17320).

Your daughter will learn how the human body works as a system of interconnected parts. The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body through the lungs and removes carbon dioxide. The circulatory system pumps blood throughout the body to carry oxygen and nutrients to every tissue. The digestive system breaks down food so the body can absorb what it needs. The excretory system removes waste. The sensory system lets the body detect and respond to what is happening inside and around it. She will see how individual organs and tissues, made up of specialized cells, each play a role in keeping the body healthy. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17321).

She will learn that the body responds to changes. When you exercise, your heart beats faster to pump more oxygen-rich blood to your muscles. When you are cold, your metabolism speeds up to generate heat. When you touch something hot, your nerves send a signal that makes you pull your hand away instantly. These responses help keep the body balanced and safe. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17321).

Your daughter will explore how scientists study the body and develop new treatments. Research into how cells, organs and systems work has led to medicines, vaccines, and better nutrition advice. She will investigate factors that affect how well body systems work, such as illness, age, exercise, diet and air quality. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17322).

### How to help at home

**Observe your own body systems in action.** Ask your daughter to take her pulse before and after exercise and count how many beats per minute. Talk about why her heart beats faster when she moves: it is pumping more blood to deliver oxygen to her muscles. This shows the circulatory system responding to what the body needs. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17321).

**Trace the path of food.** Eat a meal together and talk about what happens to the food as it moves through the body. Start with chewing (breaking it into smaller pieces), then swallowing, then digestion in the stomach and small intestine where nutrients are absorbed, and finally waste leaving the body. You can draw a simple diagram showing the digestive system. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17321).

**Look at cells under a microscope if you have access to one.** Prepare a wet mount of a plant cell (a thin slice of onion skin) or an animal cell (a cheek cell scraped gently from inside the mouth). Ask her to draw what she sees and label the parts. This makes the idea of cells real and visible. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17320).

**Discuss how lifestyle affects body systems.** Talk about how sleep, exercise, healthy food, and clean air help the body work well. Ask her why doctors recommend these things and what happens to body systems when we do not get enough sleep or exercise, or when we breathe polluted air. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17322).

**Explore reflex responses.** Gently tap just below her knee with a light object and watch her leg kick without her thinking about it. Talk about how this reflex protects the body by reacting faster than conscious thought. This shows the sensory and nervous systems working together. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/17321).
