*Grade 1 Phonics and Word Recognition*

## Slide 1: Letters, Sounds, and Words
*Grade 1 Phonics and Word Recognition*

> Notes: Welcome slide. Introduce the unit: we are going to become letter and sound detectives. Set a warm, playful tone. Aligns to.

## Slide 2: What We Will Learn
- Letters make sounds
- Some letters are vowels, some are consonants
- Two letters can team up to make one sound
- We will read and write many words
*Sources: [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44871), [Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44873), [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44875), [Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44877)*
> Notes: Learning intentions slide. Read each bullet aloud with the class. Success criteria: I can name a letter and its sound. I can sort letters into vowels and consonants. Checkpoint: thumbs up if you know one vowel letter.

## Slide 3: How We Read a New Word
1. **Look at the letters**: Find each letter in the word, upper case or lower case
2. **Say each sound**: Match each letter or letter pair to its sound
3. **Blend the sounds**: Push the sounds together quickly and smoothly
4. **Read the word**: Say the whole word and check it makes sense
*Sources: [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44871), [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44875), [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44882), [Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44884)*
> Notes: Model this on the board with a simple word like 'sun'. Materials: whiteboard, magnetic letters. Checkpoint: have students blend a 3-sound word like 'cat' with you. Support: use fewer, simpler words for students still learning letter names. Extension: try 4-sound words with a blend like 'stop'.

## Slide 4: Tricky and Special Words
- **Sight words**: Some words like 'the' cannot be sounded out, so we learn them by sight
- **125 words**: We practice reading 125 high-frequency words fast and without help
- **Bossy r**: The letter r can change a vowel sound, like in bird and turn
- **Silent letters**: Some letters in words make no sound at all
*Sources: [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44886), [Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44888), [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44875)*
> Notes: Use a sight word wall for daily practice. Materials: flash cards with high-frequency words. Formative checkpoint: quick flash card round, students say word within 3 seconds. Support: reduce word set to 10 at a time. Extension: use sight words in a written sentence.

## Slide 5: Reading Smoothly and With Feeling
**Accuracy and Speed**
Good readers know letters fast. They blend sounds quickly and correctly. This helps them figure out new words without stopping.
**Expression**
Fluent readers pause at commas and stop at periods. Their voice goes up for a question mark and gets excited for an exclamation mark. This makes reading sound like real talking.

> Notes: Model reading a short sentence three ways: flat, then with punctuation expression. Ask students which sounds more like talking. Checkpoint: partner reading practice with a simple sentence containing a period, question mark, and exclamation mark. Support: provide sentence strips with punctuation highlighted. Extension: students write their own sentence with all three punctuation marks.

## Slide 6: Sound Detectives, Every Day
**Summary:** We learned that letters stand for sounds, that some letters team up, and that blending sounds helps us read new words. We also learned that smooth, expressive reading helps us understand stories better.
**Question:** Can you find a word at home with a letter team, like two letters making one sound?

> Notes: Wrap up with a class cheer: We are sound detectives! Send home a simple word hunt sheet. Formative checkpoint: exit ticket, students write or say one letter sound they learned today.
