# Comprehending and Responding to Texts
*ELA 30-1, General Outcome 2: Constructing Meaning and Forming Response*

> Notes: Introduce the unit by framing General Outcome 2 as the umbrella for everything covered: comprehension strategies, context analysis, and personal/critical response. Preview that today's lesson moves from understanding text to evaluating and appreciating it.

## Slide 2: Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
- I can apply strategies to comprehend literature and other texts, including close reading for subtext.
- I can analyze how controlling ideas, supporting ideas and details work together in a text.
- I can explain how context, both the text creator's and my own, shapes meaning.
- I can evaluate a text's effectiveness using criteria I identify and justify.
- Success looks like: an annotated passage, a written analysis paragraph, and a spoken justification of my interpretation.

> Notes: Read learning intentions aloud and connect each to the specific outcomes referenced. Have students paraphrase one success criterion in their own words as a quick check for understanding before moving on.

## Slide 3: From Comprehension to Response: A Process
1. **Engage prior knowledge**: Recall related texts, genres and experiences before reading.
2. **Discern context**: Identify the creator's purpose, audience and communication situation.
3. **Comprehend content**: Annotate, question and trace controlling and supporting ideas.
4. **Connect and evaluate**: Form a personal position and test it against evidence in the text.
5. **Appreciate craft**: Name the techniques and articulate why they work.

> Notes: Walk through the flow using a short shared text, ideally one students have already read this term. Pause at each step and ask students to demonstrate it aloud with that text before moving to the next.

## Slide 4: Two Lenses on the Same Text
**Understanding content**
Trace how setting, plot, character and atmosphere build theme. Analyze character motivation, tone and register, and how figurative language, symbol and imagery carry meaning. Consider how visual or aural elements in a presentation affect the message and the presenter's credibility.
**Responding personally and critically**
Identify personal, moral and cultural perspectives raised by the text, and notice how your own view shifts through discussion. Form a position on an issue the text raises. Weigh a character's choices against your own values and those of others in class.

> Notes: Use this slide to distinguish comprehension work (left) from response work (right), while showing they happen together in practice. Ask students to complete one sentence stem from each column using their current novel or article study.

## Slide 5: Criteria for Evaluating a Text
- **Plausibility of setting and plot**: Does the created reality hold together, even in fiction?
- **Consistency of character**: Do behaviour and motivation stay believable and serve the theme?
- **Strength of controlling idea**: Are supporting details adequate, relevant and effective?
- **Effectiveness of technique**: Do rhetorical devices, irony or imagery sharpen tone and meaning?
- **Fit of form to purpose**: Does the structure or medium suit the audience and content?
- **Craft and artistry**: Can you name the technique and explain why it works?

> Notes: Model applying two or three of these criteria to a diploma-style excerpt. Support struggling students by giving them a partially completed criteria chart; extend stronger students by asking them to propose and justify a new criterion of their own, per 's instruction to modify criteria as needed.

## Slide 6: Putting It Together
**Summary:** Comprehending and responding to a text means reading closely for content and context, then testing your interpretation against evidence, personal experience and stated criteria. Strong readers name the techniques a text creator uses, explain their effect, and take a defensible position on the text's meaning and value.
**Question:** Choose one text from this course. What single detail changed your interpretation once you considered the creator's context and purpose, and why?

> Notes: Use the closing question as an exit ticket, written or verbal. Listen for students who cite specific textual evidence rather than general impressions; this signals readiness for the diploma-style written response. Flag students who need more practice with context (2.1.1) for small-group follow-up.
