# Sound Out and Read

*30 minutes, 3 stages*

When you recognize letters and the sounds they make, you can read new words on your own ([Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44869)). This homework helps you connect letters to sounds and blend them together smoothly.

## Stage 1: Letter Sounds (8 min)

Say each letter out loud. Write the sound it makes next to it. The first one is done for you.

b = /b/ sound (like in "bat")

d = _______________

m = _______________

s = _______________

t = _______________

Now write a word that starts with each letter. You can copy from a book or write your own.

b: bat

d: _______________

m: _______________

s: _______________

t: _______________

## Stage 2: Blend and Read (14 min)

Say each sound in the word slowly. Then say the whole word fast. Write the word on the line.

Example: c-a-t = cat

s-i-t = _______________

m-a-t = _______________

b-i-g = _______________

d-o-g = _______________

t-a-p = _______________

Now read these words aloud to yourself. Say them smoothly, like you are talking ([Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/44880)).

The cat sat on the mat.

The dog is big.

## Stage 3: Make Your Own Words (8 min)

Pick three consonants (letters like b, d, m, s, t). Pick one short vowel sound (a, i, or o). Mix them to make new words. Write them down.

Example: Using b, t, and a: bat, tab, at

Your consonants: _____, _____, _____

Your vowel: _____

New words you made:

1. _______________

2. _______________

3. _______________

## Self-check

1. Can you say the sound each letter makes without stopping to think?

2. When you blend sounds together, do the words make sense?

3. Did you write at least three words you made yourself?
