# Addition and Subtraction within 100

*30 minutes, 3 stages*

You are learning to add and subtract numbers up to 100 ([Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29844)). When you can break numbers into tens and ones, and try different ways to make the same sum, you become faster and more confident with math ([Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29850), [Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29850)).

## Stage 1: Number Facts (8 min)

Write the answer to each number fact. These are the facts you know by heart.

3 + 4 =

5 + 5 =

6 + 2 =

7 + 3 =

8 + 1 =

9 − 4 =

10 − 3 =

8 − 5 =

7 − 2 =

6 − 1 =

Now write two more addition facts you know. You choose the numbers (but keep them under 10).

## Stage 2: Two-Digit Addition (12 min)

Solve each problem. Show your work by drawing tens and ones, or by writing the numbers you break apart.

**Problem 1:** 23 + 15 =

**Problem 2:** 34 + 20 =

**Problem 3:** 42 + 13 =

**Problem 4:** 25 + 25 =

For Problem 4, write down one other way you could make the same sum using two different numbers ([Understanding](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29847)).

Example: 50 = 30 + 20, or 50 = 40 + 10.

## Stage 3: Subtraction and Missing Numbers (10 min)

Solve each subtraction problem.

**Problem 1:** 47 − 10 =

**Problem 2:** 56 − 23 =

**Problem 3:** 68 − 14 =

Now find the missing number ([Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29852)).

**Problem 4:** 30 + ___ = 55

**Problem 5:** ___ − 20 = 35

## Self-check

Answer these questions to know if you are ready.

1. Can you add two numbers that make 100 or less? Try 38 + 21. Did you break them into tens and ones?

2. Can you show one sum in two different ways? For example, can you write 40 as the sum of two numbers in more than one way?

3. When you subtract, can you check your answer by adding? For example, if you found 50 − 15 = 35, can you add 35 + 15 to check?
