# Communities in Alberta: What Makes Them Strong

*30 minutes, 3 stages*

Every community in Alberta has people who care. A community is a place where people live together. Think about how a community works. Then you can see how you fit in. You can think of ways to help too. This homework helps you think about people in your Alberta community. It also helps you think about places in your community ([Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/47688)).

## Stage 1: Map Your Community (8 min)

Draw a simple map of your neighbourhood or town. A neighbourhood is the area near your home. Helping your community is part of being a good citizen in Canada. Include:

- Your home or school
- A park or playground where people play
- A store or shop where people buy things
- A library, community centre, or place of worship

Label each place with its name. Write one sentence about why that place matters to your community.

Example: "The library is where people borrow books and learn new things."

## Stage 2: People Who Help (12 min)

Think of three people in your community who do important work. They might be a teacher. They might be a firefighter. They might be a shop owner, parent, or neighbour. Write their job title. Write what they do.

Example:
- Teacher: helps children learn to read and do maths
- Firefighter: keeps people safe from fire
- Doctor: helps people feel better when they are sick

For each person, write one way their work helps the community.

Example: "The teacher helps children learn, so we can grow up ready for new jobs."

## Stage 3: Your Responsibility (10 min)

Now think about you. Write three things you can do to help your community. They can be small.

Examples:
- Pick up litter in the park
- Help a friend who is sad
- Share toys with others
- Listen when someone is talking

For each one, write why it helps.

Example: "If I pick up litter, the park looks nice and people want to play there."

## Self-check

Ask yourself these questions. Answer yes or no.

1. Did you name at least three places in your community and say why they matter?
2. Did you write about three people who help and explain what they do?
3. Did you think of three things you can do and say how each one helps your community?

If you answered yes to all three, you have finished your homework well.
