# Patterns All Around

*30 minutes, 3 stages*

Patterns help you see how things change. Some patterns grow bigger. Some patterns repeat over and over. You will find, build, and explain patterns tonight ([Outcome](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29883), [Understanding](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29886)).

## Stage 1: Warm-up (8 min)

Look around your home. Find one pattern that does NOT repeat. It might be in a rug, a plant, a building, or a piece of art ([Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29887)).

Write two sentences about it:
1. What is the pattern?
2. How does it change?

Now grab a hundreds chart (or draw a 10 by 10 grid and fill in numbers 1 to 100). Colour every number that ends in 5. What pattern do you see going down the column? ([Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29887))

## Stage 2: Build it (15 min)

**Part A: Repeating pattern**
Make a pattern core using two attributes, like size AND colour. Use up to four elements. For example: big red circle, small blue circle, big red circle, small blue circle ([Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29891), [Understanding](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29890)).

Draw your pattern core. Then repeat it three times.

**Part B: Growing pattern**
Create an increasing pattern. Use claps, dots, or small objects like buttons. Start with 1, then add more each time.

Example: 1 clap, 3 claps, 5 claps, 7 claps.

Write your growing pattern using numbers. Show at least four steps ([Skills](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29887)).

**Part C: Explain the change**
For your growing pattern, answer:
- Is the number of elements increasing or decreasing?
- How many more are added each time? ([Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29885), [Understanding](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29886))

## Stage 3: Predict and connect (7 min)

Look at this pattern: 4, 8, 4, 8, 4, 8, ___, ___

Write the next two numbers.

Look at this growing pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, ___, ___

Write the next two numbers. Explain in one sentence how you know.

Think of one place in your daily life where you see a repeating pattern, like a song, a dance step, or a bedtime routine. Write it down ([Knowledge](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29885)).

## Self-check

1. What is the difference between a repeating pattern and a growing pattern?
2. In your Part A pattern, name the two attributes that change (for example, size and colour).
3. In the pattern 4, 8, 4, 8, 4, 8, is the change repeating or increasing? How do you know?
