# What your child will learn in Grade 2 math

## Number

Your daughter will work with numbers up to 1000 and learn what they mean. She will count larger amounts, compare which number is bigger or smaller, and use numbers to label things like pages in a book or items in a collection. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29822).

She will also learn addition and subtraction by solving problems where she adds or takes away. She might investigate addition and subtraction within 100. These are real problems she can act out with objects or draw on paper. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29844).

Your daughter will learn about parts and wholes using simple fractions. For example, she will understand that two halves make one whole pizza, or that three thirds make one chocolate bar. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29854).

## Geometry

Your daughter will look at shapes and describe what makes them different. She might notice that a triangle has three corners and three sides, while a square has four corners and four equal sides. She will learn the names of shapes and explain which shapes fit together or roll. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29861).

## Measurement

Your daughter will measure how long things are using units like centimetres. She will use a ruler or measuring tape to find the length of her pencil, a book, or a piece of string. Understanding length helps her see how objects compare in size. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29872).

## Patterns

Your daughter will find patterns in numbers, shapes, and colours. A pattern might be 2, 4, 6, 8 or red, blue, red, blue. She will explain what comes next and why the pattern works that way. Spotting patterns helps her solve problems faster. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29883).

## Time

Your daughter will learn how long things take. She will understand the difference between a quick activity like brushing her teeth and a longer activity like playing outside. She will read clocks and know what time things happen during her day. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29894).

## Statistics

Your daughter will relate data to a variety of representations. For example, she might ask her classmates their favourite fruit and draw a picture graph to show the answers. Looking at data helps her answer questions and make choices. [See the curriculum](https://goa-cc-uat-aili-app-001.azurewebsites.net/explore/node/29905).

## How to help at home

### Number

Ask your daughter to count objects around the house, like buttons, crackers, or toys, and tell you how many there are. This builds her sense of larger numbers.

Play a game where you write two numbers and ask which one is bigger or smaller. Use numbers up to 100 at first, then try bigger numbers.

Give her simple addition and subtraction stories: "You have 5 apples. I give you 3 more. How many do you have now?" Let her use real objects or her fingers to work it out.

Show her how to split a snack fairly. If you have 8 crackers and two people, how many does each person get? This teaches her about parts and wholes.

### Geometry

Look at shapes in your home. Ask her to find all the rectangles, circles, or triangles she can see. Talk about what makes each shape special.

Play with building blocks or Lego and ask her to describe the shapes she makes.

### Measurement

Let her measure things with a ruler or measuring tape. Ask how long her toy car is, or how tall her stuffed animal is. Write down the measurements and compare them.

Use her body to measure. How many of her hand-widths is the table? How many of her footsteps is the hallway?

### Patterns

Look for patterns in everyday life: the pattern on her socks, the tiles on the kitchen floor, or the way fence posts line up. Ask her what comes next.

Make patterns together with buttons, pasta, or blocks. Start with a simple pattern and ask her to continue it.

### Time

Talk about what happens at different times of day. "We eat breakfast at 8 o'clock. We eat lunch at 12 o'clock." Help her read a clock and notice when the hands move.

### Statistics

Ask her to collect simple data. "How many people in our family like pizza? How many like tacos?" Help her draw a picture to show the answer. This teaches her that data can answer real questions.
